Seasonal Changes in Water Relations, Photosynthesis and Leaf Anatomy of Two Species Growing along a Natural Co2 Gradient

چکیده
In order to gain knowledge on the physiological and anatomical responses of plants to long-term growth under elevated CO2 concentrations, measurements of water status, leaf gas exchange and leaf anatomical characteristics were made during the rainy and the dry season in plants of Brownea coccinea and Spatiphylum cannifolium growing along a natural CO2 gradient, from 35000μmol·mol (supra-atmospheric CO2 concentration, SC) to 435μmol·mol (ambient CO2, AC) in the riparian forest of the Santa Ana river, Sucre State, Venezuela. Water potential (ψ) was higher during the rainy than the dry season in both species. Growth under SC did not cause changes in ψ of B. coccinea, whereas it decreased it in S. cannifolium; both drought and growth under SC decreased leaf sap osmotic potential (ψπ) in both species, helping maintain turgor pressure in B. coccinea but not in S. cannifolium. Elevated CO2 increased photosynthetic rate (A) and leaf conductance (gs) of B. coccinea under drought but no effect was found in S. cannifolium. Leaves of both species growing under SC were 10% thicker than under AC, owing to a proportional increase in the thickness of the mesophyll tissues; additionally, during the dry season a higher deposition of epicuticular waxes took place on leaves of S. cannifolium growing under SC. Changes in photosynthetic rate, leaf conductance and leaf anatomy suggest acclimation to growth under elevated CO2. SEASONAL CHANGES IN WATER RELATIONS, PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Seasonal trends and relationships of light, temperature and leaf physiological traits of sugar beets (Beta vulgaris L.) grown under semi-arid, Mediterranean conditions
The seasonal changes of leaf physiological traits and its relationship with abiotic factors (photosynthetic active radiation-PAR, leaf temperature-Tleaf, air temperature-Tair, Tleaf - Tair- ΔT) were studied on sugar beets grown under the semi-arid conditions of central Greece. Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) cv Rizor was established in a Randomised Complete Block design experiment for two years (...

Biochemical leaf photosynthesis models are evaluated by laboratory results andhave been widely used at field scale for quantification of plant production, biochemical cycles and land surface processes. It is a key issue to search forappropriate model structure and parameterization, which determine modeluncertainty. A leaf photosynthesis model that couples the Farquhar-vonCaemmerer-Berry (FvCB) f...
متن کاملDifferentiation of C4 photosynthesis along a leaf developmental gradient in two Cleome species having different forms of Kranz anatomy
In family Cleomaceae there are NAD-malic enzyme-type C4 species having different forms of leaf anatomy. Leaves of Cleome angustifolia have Glossocardioid-type anatomy with a single complex Kranz unit which surrounds all the veins, while C. gynandra has Atriplicoid anatomy with multiple Kranz units, each surrounding an individual vein. Biochemical and ultrastructural differentiation of mesophyll...

Photosynthesis rates and photosynthesis-leaf nutrient relationships were analysed in nine tropical grass and sedge species growing in three different ecosystems: a rain-fed grassland, a seasonal floodplain, and a permanent swamp, located along a hydrological gradient in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. These investigations were conducted during the rainy season, at a time of the year when differen...
